Karen S. Ellis

JOINED MMS IN: late 1980s

RESPONSIBILITIES: Karen helps organizations — including nonprofits, businesses/corporate social responsibility teams, and philanthropies — plan, execute, and measure impact of strategic initiatives designed to help schools, children, communities, and networks thrive. Her primary areas of focus are strategic planning, program/initiative design, convenings, network building, measurement, and evaluation. Much of her recent work has centered on whole child well-being, school wellness, early childhood, and community engagement. Other focus areas include early literacy and STEM education.

PRIOR EMPLOYMENT: Karen worked in design and production for Springer-Verlag New York, an international publisher specializing in science, mathematics, and technology. She was also a designer of books and periodicals for a variety of trade and university presses.

EDUCATION: B.A., Tufts University, with a focus on nutrition policy in developing countries

ASSOCIATIONS AND AWARDS: Karen has chaired and served on several National Science Foundation review panels for Informal Science Education grants in media and technology. She has earned several distinguished achievement awards from the Association of Educational Publishers and an Emmy Award as co-executive producer of a live videoconference that aired nationally on PBS titled “TV and Teaching Science.”

PERSONAL: Karen rows competitively (single and double sculls) and plays classical piano uncompetitively.
