NEWTOWN, Pa., July 1, 2007: MMS Education has conducted its third annual study of the K-8 supplemental materials market and presented the findings at the Association of Educational Publishers National Summit on June 11, 2007, in Washington D.C. Some of the key findings include:
- District administrators are playing a greater role in the decision-making process for supplemental materials — 25% of all participants indicate that the district is the final decision-maker (up from 18% in 2006) and more than half indicated that the district and school are equally involved in making purchasing decisions.
- 70% of all survey participants indicated that supplemental materials spending for the upcoming year would increase or stay the same.
- In the higher grades, specifically 6-8, there is a greater interest in purchasing technology-based products, and online or Internet-delivered content is one of the top four preferred formats for content delivery in all curriculum categories.
- Surprisingly, 45% of all survey participants had taken part in a webinar. Most of these (75%) were district administrators and the reasons for attending a webinar were for professional development (53%), new product demonstrations (43%) and product training (36%).
- Overall, educators are continuing to increase their use of the Internet and websites for product selection and purchasing — 83% of all participants said they had visited a publisher’s website to get information about products, and more than half (52%) had indicated that their district or school ordered online.
The study was conducted as one of MMS Education’s industry studies in spring 2007, with approximately 300 district- and building-level decision-makers responding. MMS Education conducts industry studies as well as customized market studies for clients and has helped clients assess trends, conduct feasibility studies, analyze customer relationships, and evaluate the competitive environment.
